The 2017 NHL Entry Draft, held in Chicago, saw a few familiar faces from our Boys Selects Program. There were a total of 40 Selects Alumni drafted, including 13 in the first round alone, making this year our most successful draft yet!
Expansion team, the Vegas Golden Knights, made Western Canada Selects alum Cody Glass the club’s first ever draft pick, going sixth overall. It didn’t stop there - out of the Golden Knight’s 12 draft picks, five were Selects Alum.
This included Ben Jones (pictured on right) as their final pick, going 189th overall. Jones' father, Dr. Lyndon Jones, credits the Selects program as a stepping stone to his career.
"Selects gave him the opportunity to become an NHL draftee," said Dr. Jones.
"Had we not attended that Selects tryout on January 2nd, 2011, we would never have realized that Ben was quite a decent hockey player compared with others in his age group! This ended up with him playing for the Marlies, which resulted in him being drafted to the OHL and him subsequently being drafted to the NHL this past weekend"
A lot of young hockey players had their dreams come true and the next steps of their careers began. For forty of those young men, it all started with Selects.
Alumni above went 6th, 9th, 10th, and 12th respectively.
