Suburban Ice Arena of East Lansing, Michigan, played host to 18 teams at the Capital Cup, where Mites at the ‘10 and ‘11 age groups got the unique opportunity to compete in full-ice games during this weekend tournament. In the Platinum Division, the Naperville Jr. Sabres defeated the TLC Stars – Green in a low-scoring 2-1 championship game. That win capped off a perfect 5-0-0 weekend record in which four of the Sabres’ five games were decided by two-goals-or-fewer in a very competitive division.
The Sylvania Selects – Kuhr took the championship in the Gold Division with a 3-1 win over Brighton Ice. Sylvania overcame a 4-3 shootout decision on Friday to win its next four consecutive games en route to a 5-1-0 record and division title.
The Silver Division championship went to the unbeaten Sylvania Selects – Beaudoin after a 5-4 win over Belle Tire in the Sunday morning finale. With a 4-0-0 record, Sylvania edged out Belle Tire not once, but twice in one-goal games including the championship to claim the title.
The full-ice experience for players at this age group is a unique opportunity and, in some cases the teams’ first chance to compete in a 200-foot game.
