The Inaugural Freeze in the D showcased 16 girls’ teams across three age groups in Detroit, with teams from throughout the Midwest in action over the weekend. Competing at the 16U, 14U and 10U age groups, these ladies elevated their games at the Kennedy Recreation Center as we named three teams to be champions of the first-year event.
In the 16U Division, the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers only loss of the weekend came in the form of a 3-0 defeat to the Northshore Warhawks during pool play. The two teams collided again in the championship, this time, the Jr. Flyers had just enough to edge out the Warhawks 2-1, avenging their only loss of the weekend and finishing 4-1-0 in the tournament.
Rocky Mountain began the tournament with a 2-1 loss at the hands of Little Caesars-Farmington Hills on Friday. In the rematch, though, it’d be the Roughriders earning a 1-0 victory to win the 14U championship thanks in part to their 20-6 goal differential on the weekend.
In a low-scoring weekend, Honeybaked produced just four goals in its final three games of the tournament, but a 1-0 victory over DSC Wildflowers proved to be just enough to win the 10U Division championship. Honeybaked finished the tournament with a 4-0-1 record.
All three championships came down to one-goal games in what proved to be a closely contested tournament in just its first year.
