We’ve concluded another successful year for our annual Nations Cup tournament. It was a great turnout with families from all over the United States and Canada coming together in support of their players, teams, and country. This unique and long standing event brings teams from each country together to join forces, wear their country’s jersey with pride, and battle the opposition for bragging rights. Each victory is awarded a point towards each Nation's total, rather than just a win or a loss for the individual team.
For the 07 Division this year, Team USA consisted of St. Clair Shores, Chicago Fury, Saginaw Jr. Spirit, Cleveland Barons, Victory Honda, Chicago Hawks, Chicago Bulldogs, and Sylvania North Stars. While Team Canada included the Chatham-Kent Cyclones, Waterloo Wolves, Halton Hurricanes, Burlington Eagles, Sun County Panthers, Brantford 99’ers, Niagara North Stars, and Huron-Perth Lakers. All individual teams were granted 4 games with 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. At the end of the first two days of competitive play, Team Canada went on to win the round robin 39-25. As the winner, Canada was awarded a powerplay to start the game on Sunday with a home team advantage. With Sunday’s game scores reset to zero, Team Canada would go on to win 16-4.
In our 05 division, Team USA was made up of the Ohio Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite (Black). Milwaukee Jr. Admirals, Sylvania North Stars, and Fox Motors. Team Canada consisted of Sun County Panthers, Lambton Jr. Sting, Green Bay Gamblers, TC North Stars, and Cleveland Barons. In this division’s round robin, the play was so evenly matched that final score going into Sunday was 20-20. As a result, neither country was awarded a powerplay to start the game and the home team advantage was awarded to the team that had a better round robin. Team USA went on to win the first 3 games of Championship on Sunday earning 6 points (5th seed game = 1 point, 4th seed game = 2 points, 3rd seed game = 3 points). However, Lambton and Sun County were victorious in both their games (2nd seed = 4 points, 1st = 5 points) earning Team Canada a 9-6 victory and the Nations Cup.
The 03 division was made up of Sylvania North Stars, Ohio Blue Jackets, Rocky Mountain Roughriders, Green Bay Jr. Gamblers, Wheatfield Blades, Orland Park Vikings, Gentry Galaxy, and Team Meijer, and different from the other two divisions, played a regular tournament style format. After 4 round robin games the top 4 teams included: #1 Gentry Galaxy (4-0), #2 Rocky Mountain Roughriders (3-0-1), #3 Sylvania North Stars (2-1-1), and Team Meijer (2-2-0). In the final game on Sunday, Meijer would go on beating Sylvania 1-0 and Gentry Galaxy took the victory with an impressive 8-1 win to become the 2017 ‘03 division champs!
