Cal Foote becomes fourth player from 2012-13 tournament to earn an entry-level deal.

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed defenseman Cal Foote to an entry-level contract on Sunday. Foote spent the past three seasons in the WHL with the Kelowna Rockets, after playing much of his youth hockey in the Colorado Thunderbirds program.

Foote competed in the 2012-13 Nation’s Cup in East Lansing, Michigan, a Winter tournament that featured 14 future NHL Draft picks from the ‘98 birth-year, including the Tampa Bay prospect.

With this signing, Foote joins Clayton Keller (Arizona Coyotes), Ryan Lindgren (New York Rangers) and Trent Frederic (Boston Bruins) as notable alumni from the Nation’s Cup to earn entry-level NHL contracts this season.

At 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds, Foote was selected by the Lightning with the 14th overall pick in last year’s draft and instantly became one of the organization’s top up-and-comers.

The son of former NHL D-man Adam Foote, Cal joins a Tampa Bay team currently in second place in the Atlantic division with three regular-season games remaining. However, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger expects the 19-year-old to report to the organization’s AHL affiliate, Syracuse.
