In just its second season, the Girls' U-16 team at Bishop Kearney battles its way to division final.

The Girls’ Selects Academy at Bishop Kearney capped off a remarkable season with a run to the U-16 National championship on Monday, in just its second season as a program.

The Academy operates as a partnership between the school (Bishop Kearney) and the hockey program (operated by Legacy Global Sports Hockey, Selects division) and provides student-athletes with a quality private boarding school education coupled with an elite athletic experience. The team is proudly rostered as a Tier-I organization representing Rochester Youth Hockey (Coalition).

Improving upon last year’s performance in which the team went 2-1-0 in pool play but fell short of advancing to the single-elimination tournament, this year’s U-16 squad went a perfect 3-0 in pool play and were victorious in Sunday’s quarterfinal and semifinal games just six hours apart.

Brent Hill, the first-year head coach and program director, led the gritty Selects to the championship game by going 5-0-0 over the weekend while outscoring the opponent 22-to-4, en route to the final on Monday against Chicago Mission.

There, the Selects came up just shy of their goal, falling 2-1 in the championship game.

While the end result is somber, it marks a tremendous achievement overall for a program in just its second season to reach the national championship. Standouts like Emma Conner (seven goals, 11 points), Haley Winn (two goals, nine points), Kiara Zanon (three goals, nine points) and Laila Edwards (three goals, seven points) helped take the young program to new heights, earning national respect for Bishop Kearney and Selects Academy.

In addition to the Academy, there were more than 100 other Selects Hockey alums on various teams throughout the U15, U16 and U19 national championship tournaments in Marlborough, Mass., so the 2018 Tier-I divisions were well-represented.
