Top-level girls from 43 of the best teams in the country ascended on Detroit for the Elite Girls Invitational over the weekend. From 19U to 12U, the DEGI is one of LGS Hockey’s most competitive girls’ tournaments of the winter schedule. After nearly 100 games, the best of the best separated themselves as champions of the four divisions.
The 19U Division pitted Belle Tire against the St. Louis Lady Blues in a battle between two Top-20 teams in the country. Belle Tire edged out the Lady Blues 2-1 in the finale, capping off a perfect 6-0-0 weekend record in which they allowed just two goals against.
In the 13-team 16U Division, it was a battle of two hometown teams in Belle Tire and Little Caesars. A high-power offense fueled No. 4-ranked Little Caesars, outscoring No. 14 Belle Tire 6-3 in the championship, and a tournament-high 33 goals in six games.
Also a battle of two Detroit-based teams, the 14U Division pitted Little Caesars and Belle Tire against each other as well. After losing their opening game of the tournament, Little Caesars rolled to five straight wins, scoring four-or-more goals in three of those outings, including the 5-1 decision over Belle Tire in the final.
The No. 1 team in the country asserted its dominance on the 12U Division. After beginning the tournament against Canada’s No. 1 team, Peterborough Ice Kats, The Chicago Mission put together five straight wins, including back-to-back shutouts in the playoffs to win the championship.
